The Orchard Year
Books, and what became of them
A small selection of commissions that clients were happy to share. Most of the work stays private, which suits the books and their owners just fine.
Notes on Ferns
Letters, 1912–1918
The Weather Book
A Book of Hours
The Mill Ledger
Every one of these began as a conversation
Some books arrive with a clear idea attached: a colour, a title, a shelf they have to fit. Others arrive as a box of loose sections and a family story. Both are good starting points.
Estimates are written, not guessed. If a book does not need the full treatment, we will say so — a sound cloth reback is often better than a new binding, and considerably cheaper.
Most commissions stay private
We do not photograph a book for the site unless its owner is happy for us to. The pieces shown here were shared with permission.
No two bindings alike
Materials are chosen for the book and the owner, not from a catalogue of standard options.
